How to find out when people are talking about your business with Google Alerts

Do you want to know when people are talking about you or your business online?

You should…

There are several reasons why:

You can follow up with referrals to make sure you don’t miss out on any of those precious leads!

Thank clients for their kind words when they speak positively about you online.

Get notified if you are mentioned in any industry blogs or publications so you can shout about them on your website and social!

Respond to any negative feedback. This is possibly the most important as bad feedback spreads much quicker than good so it is important to have your right to reply. Remember you are not writing the reply to your critic, you are writing to your future customers so be polite and professional.

So how can you quickly find out when you are mentioned online? It’s pretty simple. Google offer a free tool called Google Alerts which notifies you as soon as any term is discussed across the web. Even better, it’s completely free.

You log in with your Google Account and can enter all of the relevant terms for you or your business.

For arguments sake, let’s say I am Elon Musk and I want to keep up to date with all the mentions about me and my company online. I could create alerts for terms like the following:

“Elon Musk”
“Tesla”
“Model S”
“Model X”
“Model 3”
“Space X”
“Neuralink”
And so on…

Setting up Google Alerts is actually very simple and can be done in about 5 – 10 minutes. Here is how you do it.

1. Go to www.google.co.uk/alerts (or use .com if you are outside the UK)
